The man behind DamonPlaysChess.
I've always been interested in the game of Chess. The strategy, the accountability, the simplicity, everything. Just you vs. the man or woman across from you, battling it out over a (seemingly) simple board game.
I didn't grow up around the game. I didn't start playing at age 3. I'm not a prodigy. Quite frankly, I'm very bad at the game of Chess. But, something about it has always interested me.
I took a special liking to the game in July of 2025. I started playing casually for 30mins - 1hr before bed every night, and I started to realize something about me. I talk aloud while I play the game to help me understand the position and make the moves that I think are best.
Upon realizing this, I figured at least 1 other person in the world might benefit from this natural commentary I give myself while I play. So, I setup a recording software, threw on my webcam, and played Chess how I normally do without even considering the camera being on. I posted my very first game to Instagram on July 31, 2025.
It was an overnight success. I woke up to 20+ comments, 10+ dms, and nearly 100,000 impressions. That's when I knew i found something special. I started recording and posting more content to the internet and have been on an exponential curve ever since. In the first 20 days, I cracked over 1 million impressions on Instagram alone.
Since then, I've taken the game more seriously and set a long-term goal of hitting 2000 rating in 5/0 Blitz on chess.com. At the time of this writing, I'm just over 500, so we've got a long way to go - I hope you'll accompany me.
